DC-2 Ground School At Museum of Flight Seattle

Thu Jul 26, 2012 10:01 pm

The Museum of Flight is pleased to announce a new Ground School program on the DC-2, one of the most important airframes in the history of commercial aviation. Learn all about the manufacturing and flight history of this legendary airplane, review mechanical and operational systems from the original DC-2 Pilot/Aircraft Manuals, and gain a better understanding of the skills necessary to fly and maintain it successfully. And finally, take a ride in our DC-2—a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Our course will be taught by our current DC-2 Co-Pilot Gene Vezzetti. A retired commercial pilot, Gene has been training on the DC-2 with Clay Lacy. Also teaching will be Jeff Fox, who holds both ATP and CFI ratings with over 4000 hours of flight experience. Museum of Flight curatorial staff will join us to discuss the restoration of N1934D and what it takes to maintain to her as part of our collection. In addition Lyle Bobzin-one of the first 35 pilots hired by TWA and a former DC-2 captain, will share with us what it was like to fly the early Douglas Commercial aircraft as they were introduced to the airlines.

The star of the weekend is the Museum's own DC-2, N1934D a former Pan Am Airways plane, which also served as "Smoke Jumper" aircraft for Johnson Flying Service in Montana. Our DC-2 is fully restored in TWA colors to honor the first off the line DC-2--the aircraft that fulfilled Jack Frye’s request for an alternative to the Boeing 247.

Ground School class will be held Saturday, October 6, from 9am-5pm. Sunday preflight & cockpit checkouts will begin at 9:00, followed by a ride for Ground School participants.

The Museum of Flight invites you to this chance of a lifetime opportunity to be a part of living aviation history!
