OK...Two officers (say a Colonel and a Major) are walking together. They meet someone of lower rank. That person salutes. Is the salute returned by only the Colonel or both the Colonel and the Major? Mudge the protocologist (That's not the guy who looks up your butt, is it?  )

Ordinance varies by country. Usually the salute is rendered to the higher ranking officer, in deference to his rank. Same when entering a room for example, you address the highest ranking officer present and state your business, and proceed according to instructions received. Saludos, Tulio |

They are both expected to salute back irc. When I was in AIT we had a ROTC punk demand we salute him. So we lined up the entire company ten feet apart and started em up. He threw about 200 salutes inside five minutes and never spoke to us again. |

Both officers should return the salute of the lower-ranking person. ...Now here's a "gotcha".... Two officers (say a Colonel and a Major) are walking together. They meet someone of lower rank. Under what circumstance are the higher ranks supposed to salute first (by tradition - don't believe it's in the regs, IIRC)?

Yup! By tradition (as for regulations/instructions - can't say about those, since I've never seen them in print), a recipient of the CMH receives the salute from superiors. |

 , I saw something funny at RAAF Base Wagga Wagga early in 1973. Wagga at that time was the RAAF's School of Technical Training, now also houses the No. 1 Recruit Training Unit. So there we all were lined up on the side of the parade ground waiting for the Warrant Officer Disciplinary (WOD) to call the parade to order before marching onto the ground for morning parade. The WOD's name was Doug Hardy, we used to call him Uncle Doug, a kindly soul but not one to cross or be a smart alec towards. You could say he didn't suffer fools, graciously or otherwise.
On the other side of the parade ground was a brand new young 15 year old RAAF Apprentice in a uniform that fitted him where it touched him. He was just walking down the road, (noone had yet taught him how to march) minding his own business when a junior officer passed the other way. Of course the kid didn't know anything about military etiquette and just walked on by. He was called back by this stuck up young Pilot Officer and told he was to salute any officer he saw. What then transpired got us all laughing; all except Uncle Doug. He saw this kid doing some kind of imitation naval salute, and then again and again, and again. Uncle Doug flicked his pace stick up under his left elbow and started off across the parade ground taking his time. When he finally got to this curious little circus being played out for all to see the kid was in tears and the young Pilot Officer was standing there with a pleased with himself supercilious grin on his face. Uncle Doug approached them, saluted the officer and inquired of the officer what was occurring, the officer explained to him that the apprentice had walked past him without saluting and HE (the officer) was teaching him (the kid) a lesson by making him (the kid) salute HIM (the officer) 100 times. At that point the kid was just throwing his 100th "bone" when Uncle Doug said "Very good Sir, of course we must teach the young ones correct military protocols and all, but may I remind you Sir that when an OR salutes an officer he or she is not saluting the person but the Queen's Commission that person holds. I do trust Sir, that you're going to return every single one of this young fellows 100 salutes, and if you don't I'll catch up with you later and want to know why not, and yes Sir, my spies, all 5 or 600 of them are standing on the other side of the parade ground watching and if you miss one salute they'll tell me." He then threw the young officer another bone, turned smartly on his heel and returned to us with the biggest smile I've ever seen on a WOD's face yet.  Cheers,
