Thanks for the updates!

Most appreciated :D

Maybe Boeing did like they do now with the tails and pre-painted them prior to installation on the rest of the aircraft to allow the rudder to be balanced properly and the tail numbers to be 'final painted' to save time down the line in addition to making each airframe easily identifiable? (BTW: Yes I see the insignia already on the plane, but an insignia is quite easy to mask. :))

Those are Vega-built B-17G-5-VE serial numbers. Vega deleted camouflage at the -20 block so these airframes will be painted later down the line. The vendors supplied various subassemblies already camouflaged. Much note has been made of the paint mismatch on the various components after the airplanes have been in service a while. Also, when the first airplanes in NMF came off the assembly line some vertical fins were painted silver over the O.D. that the vendor delivered them in.

Incidentally, 42-39892 went to the 91st Bomb Group and was lost on 8 March, 1944. '869 became Heaven Can Wait with the 95th and was lost on 11 April, 1944.

Seattle built B-17's mostly had verticals that were several shades different from the fuselage camouflage even though they were built literally within a mile of the assembly plant @ KBFI by the KENWORTH Trucks assembly plant and the paint all came from the same supplier who was within 2 miles of the plant.

Good Lord, Scott... you SURE you want to get into that amount of pain? I've only seen two built, ever... one on Hyperscale, and the one I built a few years ago. Easily one of the most frustrating builds I've ever dealt with, mostly due to the plastic which has the consistency of concrete. Came out OK when done, not a contest winner but good enough to sit on the shelf and not embarrass itself. :)

Good luck with it!

Lynn

Gary- Any updates on this build? I'm reading the Smithsonian book about the Swoose and its really got me thinking about getting my KAE C/D conversion down from the attic.

Has anyone ever made custom decals for when the Swoose was a diplomatic aircraft with the polished fuselage and large flag panel?
