I just inherited 30 high quality plasitc aircraft and I want to repaint some - anybody know how to safely strip the paint off

I think I heard somewhere sometime that oven cleaner works. I've never tried it myself. Like the warning goes - try in an inconspicuous place!!

My two Canadian cents worth - not sure what it's worth down under!!

Several different ways:

-take apart and soak in bleach for 2-3 days toothbrush + soapy water

-fingernail polish (works great with flats but still takes time)

-spraying with Easyoff ovencleaner (works but is nasty stuff)

Nail polish remover is pretty good.

To break them apart, put them in the freezer, it will bust the glue joints!

HI IVE FOUND THE MAJIC STUFF FOR PAINT REMOVAL FOR PLASTIC OR ANYTHING ELSE IS DOT 3 BRAKE FLUID!!!!! IT DOES NOT HARM THE PLASTIC,OVEN CLEANER IS VERY HARSH!!IF YOU DONT BELEIVE ME SPILL A LITTLE BIT ON THE OLD SEDAN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!! IVE USED IT MANY TIMES WITH GREAT RESULTS!!GOOD LUCK !!MIKE

A good modelling resource is Fine Scale Modeler magazine. I've been a long- time(14 yrs) subcriber and I've learned a tremendous amount from it, although I still am a firm believer in the 5 foot rule(if it looks good at 5ft, that's good enough!)

I am overwhelmed - thankyou everyone for your assistance on this - I will try the methods and report back

The models are in 24th and 32 scale and include 2 Spits, an Arado push/pull(cant remember model No), two georges , two P40s, 5 different model P51s (inc a A36) 2 Vals , a Seafire, a C47 (Big) 2 tonys 5 Me 109s , a hurricaneetc so I have a lot of entertainment ahead of me.

Oven cleaner contains caustic soda I think and someone told me to just dissolve caustic soda in water and use that so I might try that as well

Some of the kits won't need a lot of work other have the usual poor joint finishing and dull/poor paint and some of the decals are flaking. Again I will report progress and get back to you all with photos.

Don I love the 5 foot rule!!!

So don't ever look TOO CLOSE at any of my models. As For The Colonel's MODELS, , I perfer the closer the better rules of engagement!

Why do I have a feeling that you are refering to a totally different concept of model in reference to the good/bad Col Rohr - He led me to believe he was a world expert in interpersonal relationships and he further insisted that he was the one male person who purchases playboy just to read the articles!!!.

Col Rohr couldn't be the only one. Last copy of that I purchased was because of an article about the RAAF roulettes. mind you I did get sidetracked a couple of times on my way to that article but that's my story and I am sticking to it every time the wife says " what'd you buy that for? " or " when are you getting rid of that?"

Hi all

After the extensive help you all provided me I did a lot of experimentation and in the end the system which seems to work best for me is dissolving 4 tablespoons of caustic soda in a litre of water and then imersing the whole model in the mix - warm if possible. All the paint and decals come off within 20 mins but you still have to scrub a little in places.

I have tried this with a 1/48 Seafire Mk XV and it cleaned the bad paint off with excellent results and I am now repairing/ repainting.

I will post pics when I finish.
