Has anyone tried to repaint a diecast model out of the box that is painted already???

Has anyone tried to apply plastic model decals to a diecast??? Does it work? :?: :?

Ive been given two diecast models that I need to change the paint scheme on one and add a few things to another. This wouldnt have been my choice...I would have rather built the two models for the start..

THANKS!

I've done it; no particular problems. By way of surface prep I suggest removing all the decals/stickers you can, roughing up the metal surface with fine sandpaper, washing it up, then giving it a shot of primer. Paint for plastic models should then stick fine. Decals will be no problem at all.

The decals don't care what they get put on.

Diecast metal I blast in my blast cabinet then prime.

1/18 Plastic Aircraft I just spot sand to remove paint lines and scotchbrite.

elroy, i am currently finishing up a Franklin Mint P-51. got it cheap, so i decided to put it some markings i like. i was able to simply use nail polish remover and that took off the decals without touching the base coat. so i didn't even have to repaint everything, just stripped want i didn't want, left what i did (stars and bars, stencils) and then just applied my new markings. i'll put up a shot of it in a nite or two, just about finished.

I'd like to see that Brian.

I bought an extra Swede's Steed to make a Red Nose out of... if I ever have time for such novelties.

Thanks guys for the replies!! I did get the F-86 finished and its up inside the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. It came out pretty good considering what little time I had to work with. The pics are trapped in my old camera phone...its painted just like the F-865 at Duxford.

Here are some pics of the current armada. I didn't modify any of them, but I love them all the same!

Oh, and one of my Tuskeegee 51s has a "rare" 3 bladed prop. Anyone have any ideas on getting a replacement? I guess I could look on ebay for another cheap Sweedes Steed.
