Slightly off topic but same type AC...In the US publication Trade-A-Plane someone is offering a 10A, SN 1091 for sale. The ad says it was the plane used by Chamberlain to meet Hitler. However, one of the photos shows a history board and says it was an executive AC in pre-war Europe before enetring sewrvice with the RCAF. I'm guessing the Ad writer got a bit carried away.
What plane did Chamberlain use? What happened to it?

1091 was built for the Beta(?) Shoe Company in Czeckoslavakia in 1937. When Hitler invaded, the owner and his family escaped to the UK in her. As part of the war effort she was donated to the RCAF to be used as they saw fit in the war effort. After a full overhaul in Canada. she was returnted to the UK as an exec transport and was extensively used by both Chamberlin's office and the High Command. Her logs read like the roster of the High Command and the British government. After the war, she was surplused and owned for a time by Air Wisconsin and Margret O'Brien.

If I remember right, Doc has all of the logs since day one for her. An interesting side note is that she was also the back-up bird for A.E.'s around the world attempt.

I've got a couple of hundred hours of working to putting her back into flight condition and have flown as co-pilot a number of hours too.

I think there is also another L.10 (c/n 1145)down here that came out of a museum in Alaska being restored to airworthy.

I was enjoying C170BDans website and of course had a gander at his
Lockheed survivors page. And a coupla questions came to mind about
a few examples Dan provided.

12A, ser#1203, N12EJ has recently been purchased by a Mr. Ben Runyan,
Dan do you have any knowledge of Ben's intent regarding the future
presentation of #1203? The former owners, Steve Oliver and Susan
Asbury, I have read..."were hopeful that someone would return #1203
back to her configuration as Cotton's "spyship 12A", or words to that
effect. Dan do you have any words on this? It would be a very interesting
Warbird...meaning early(est?) stealth-Lockheed !!

Questions regarding Doc Almand's Lockheed 10, also came to mind..well
actually about Doc himself and a bird he once had. Although his 10 has
quite a history in it's own right. Dan, I think I remember Doc as having
a P-51 in Grand Prairie in the early 60's. As I remember(probably poorly)
it would have been '63-4. I saw it at the old AAF satellite field in GP at that
time. His '51 was painted in the colors of Col. Christian's Lou IV. That 51D
is most rememorable, as it's the first one..and as I think about it..the last
P-51 I ever physically touched. It is the 1st one I remember seeing fly!
As I also remember, I heard ages back, that she went South in Latin
military service..and survived the Soccer Wars..or somesuch..to return
to the states. Do you know the ser# and current N# of that P-51D? I'd
sure like to see photos of that machine again...much less see her fly
again!! I guess we never forget our 1st one!

Is Doc Almand still with us? Another thing..at that same exAAF field, which
I think was a Army reserve field then, was the 1st place I saw part of the
CAF contingent. 4 or 5 planes were attending in their white/red/blue
colours of the time.

Thanks Dan!!

AFAIK Doc is still around and kicking. I quit using him as my AME and primary care doc about 4 years ago as I moved too far away. I've run into him a couple of times since, but haven't had a chance to sit down and talk. I think he really started to loose interest in all his birds when Matt Wright passed away. Matt had become his chief mechanic after the first year and a half that I put in on getting the Lockheed back into airworthy condition. Matt spent a tremendous amount of time getting the museum set up and everything that Doc owned back into airworthy condition.

Cvair..thank you very much for the update about the Doc! What museum
would that be? Had he collected enough aircraft for a museum?
Appreciate your reply !

The re-awakening of this thread has reminded me that I was supposed to give Dan the link to the picture of the C-40 at Yanks.

Dan... If you are reading this you can use this picture on your site.

Airnutz,

I did get an email from a friend that Mr. Runyan had purchased 12EJ. As with the Spartan page I am working on an email list of the Lockheed owners so that I can work up a recent history on the aircraft. Over the next month or so I should be adding ALOT of info and pictures to the Lockheed and Spartan pages that I have collected over the winter! Really is interesting that most of the Spartan owners have Lockheeds as well! Anyway.... I'll see what I can work up on what Mr. Runyan has planned. That would be one unique Warbird to have some of the cameras mocked up in the wings!

cvairwerks is your source for info on Doc. I really only know him by his aircraft based at the nearby Denton airport. Lockheed 10, Cessna 195, PT22 and Staggerwing. I bet we can dig up info on his Mustang with a quick Google search. I'll get back to you on that.

Hope the 10 finds an enthusastic new owner that will fly it alot!

Mike... I'll take a look at your Yanks 12 picture tonight... Webshots is blocked here at work...

Dan, Thanks for your info, I look forward to the addition of the "winters
bounty" to an already great website!

Yes I tried to Google Docs P-51 info..several ways, but to no avail! All I
got was the health benefits of almonds..almond recipes...marzipan..etc.
Then while in your site I encountered the correct spelling of Almand, but
hadn't attempted another P-51 search until you mentioned it. Arrrrgghh!
Amazing what the difference one letter makes..got it on the 1st Google
hit! Oh well...

P-51D-25A, 44-73029 N51JB currently owned by Jim Beasley, Philly,Pa.
in the livery of Bald Eagle. She looks gorgeous!! Abit far for my range
though..maybe she'll make to Texas some day...I'll make the trip!!
http://www.mustangsmustangs.net/p-51/su ... 3029.shtml

An interesting note to an anomoly of 44-73029 listed in MustangsMustangs
and my memory. Between 1963 and 1969 when it was purchased by
Jessie Baker of Texas (N51JB, racer #51)... there is no mention of sale
or return from Latin America. Something of an "old tale" for me to track
down and clarify. Cool..another hunt!!

Jessie Bakers registration N51JB also fit nicely into matching Jim Beasley's
initials, as well.

Thanks again Dan..
Jim

Thanks Roger, I went with the Google hit, posted and then hauled butt to
work. Was gonna check WRC when I got in. Looks like I have some more
details to clarify between the 2 registries! I probably need to move this on
over to the Warbird Board when I come up with something..or I'll post
an inquiry there to start the ball rolling. I'm interested in 44-73029's
previous history to the current level of documentation. To the hunt!!!

Hello Mike

This is L.12-16 c/n 1306
Delivered 6 February 1942 to Netherlands East Indies Govt. as L2-38
Last with Scan-Fly (Denmark) as OY-AOV (regd. 09-04-63)
Exhibited at Egeskov Museum as L2-38.
Transferred to Dutch Military Aviation Museum, Kamp Zeist 1985.

If you like, I can send you a scan of the aircraft when it was exhibited at
Egeskov Museum

Greetings
Nils Rosengaard

So that ends the mystery!

Mike

The plane was one of a pair bought by Norwegian airline Widerøe and used for either photo mapping or surveying. Can't remember which! It was ex 43-1306, Dutch AF L2-38, Dutch AF T-2, SE-BXR, and OH-ETA before joining Widerøes as LN-BFS in 1956.

It took a while but here are some photos of the ex-Alaska L.10 (c/n1145) now in NZ being restored to to airworthy by by Rob Mackley. I took these photos last week, as you can see the center section and wings are basically done and work has just started on the fuselage.
