I am doing a study of the unloved Curtiss-Wright AT-9 "Jeep" series and have learned that AT-9A 42-57028 was bailed by the USAAF to an entity identified as the "Aviation Institute, Kansas City, MO" around April 3, 1943. I assume this was as an instructional airframe. The Kansas City Public Library system has been unable to find any references. Are there any KC area members who might have a clue about this aircraft? A photo at the Institute would be too much to hope for!

The local historical society might be able to help. Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation was there in KC, MO, building CG-4A Gliders and jobbing subassemblies for other companies. There might be a connection between the two for providing trained workers.

My dad worked at the Maple Woods Community College Aviation program in the mid 90's and don't remember that plane ever being there. I will talk to him tomorrow to see if he knows of the Aviation Institute that you are talking about.

I talked to my dad today and this is what he provided. He told that there was a school called Aero Mechanics and he was thinking the school was around 1948 or so. That company was sold to Dalford Aviation out of Dallas but wasn't sure when. He said that if any school could have an AT-9 that it would be the most likely the one. Hope this helps.
