DAYTON WRIGHT AIRCRAFT COMPANY

Tue Mar 13, 2018 12:56 pm

I know this is a long shot but does anyone know if the records of the Dayton Wright Aircraft Company have been archived anywhere ? I've tried General Motors, who purchased it in the 1920's, with no luck. I've also tried McDonnel Douglas, who was the last of a string of owners, and have also had no luck. I'm looking for production numbers and serial numbers on the production of DH-4's. Thanks

I would suggest searching through the organized Aircraft Historic record cards. many of the individual types are listed in groupings of type order & acceptance etc. some have good service history, production order, engine
ID #s military & company #s, list service history with modifications, crashes, cancellation dates & much more
cards are in numerical order. Lots to dig through

Here is One sample listing
that starts with Dayton Wright DH-4s. Start from there...in the 3300 and 3200 section for Dayton Wright DH-4s

** You can download each section, for long term study :D

FWIW, there was a rather extensive article published in the Winter 2011 of the AAHS Journal that you might find of interest. It is titled "The Other Wright Airplane Company: Dayton-Wright Airplanes", pgs 270- 285 authored by Hayden Hamilton. His research is quite thorough and there are a number of very crisp original photos included.

Also, the book titled "US Army Aircraft 1908-1946" by Fahey states that the Dayton-Wright company produced 3106 DH-4's. As a point of interest Fahey's book also states that Fisher Body produced 1600 and another firm called Standard produced 140 of the type.
