American Airlines, 1949?

Tue Apr 20, 2021 8:28 pm

Recently I found out that my grandparents, mother, and uncle traveled from the USA to England, to visit family, in 1949. My mother's memoir states that they traveled via American Airlines, including a stop in Canada on the way. All of the participants have passed, so I'll ask the question here. What type of airliner(s) did American use in those days, on that route?

Would have been a B-377 Stratocruiser or L-049 Constellation. Most likely a Constellation since the B-377s were only just entering service and didn't make stops in Gander like the L-049 did.

Thanks, CAPflyer. The question came to me as I was recently at the Pima Air museum, photographing their TWA Constellation. It was just a small bit of family history... I never thought to ask my uncle (who would have remembered) or my mother (who would not have). I must say that Pima's L-049 is a gem, even amongst their huge collection.
