Here are some of the bigger racers. Notice the two T-6's with Rangers!

That's the nicest photo I've seen of the Galloping Ghost in a long time, maybe ever. Forgive my ignorance, but I didn't know a second T-6 got a Ranger. #61 is the XAT-6E, correct?

I'd really like to have that Cletrac tug. Hey Mudge, I'll take the tug, you can have the P-38 :!:

Could be wrong, probably am, but I think that only one T-6 was fitted with the Ranger engine from the factory, and at least one or two others were done as an "aftermarket mod."

Here's an interesting side note to these photos. They all came from some sort of storage unit here in Dayton, Ohio about 20 years ago. Everything in that storage unit was bought by a guy who deals in ephimaria (sp?) i.e. paper items. Occasionally he runs across aviation items and he used to call me. Turns out all these photos came from the Peter Bowers collection!

AT-6 Race Number 49 was origionally an AT-6D and was modified with a Ranger engine. In the 1947 Halle Trophy Race, it pulled out in the 5th lap. Dori Marland was the pilot.
Per the entrant form, the engine was a Ranger V-770, V-12 of 575 HP

Racer 61 was the XAT-6E piloted bt Margrete McGrath . She had to pull out of the race in the 3rd lap. in the 1947 Halle Trophy Race,

Many years ago there used to be a photo service out of Michigan that you could purchase photos from.

Thanks for the quick answers on the Ranger/T-6 mod.

Speaking of the Ghost, here is a photo I took of it in '84 at Harlingen:

what's with the funky canopy on t-6 #42. can you enhance that pic?? i can't distinguish it's lines.

Sun Nov 16, 2008 12:34 am

The canopy has been cut down so it follows the lines of the fuselage with the exception of the rear cockpit where there is somewhat of a bubble just bit enough for the pilots head!

You can see that the t-6 #42 in picture #7 is an SNJ-2 that has been chopped up for racing. You can tell it is an SNJ-2 by the round rudder and the belly sump. It also has the large square baggage door. I wonder what ever happened to this airplane. Most of the SNJ-2 were purchased by Andy Stinnis and used for skywritting and later became what we know today as the Skytypers.

Great stuff!

The T-6 mod in photo 7...looks a bit like Rare Bear in a T-6 sort of way.

Great photo's!

I just found a website that has some Charles Hubbell lithographs that include several Cleveland Air Race winners, and some other cool planes.

I bought the 2 Cook Cleland F2G Corsair prints, his 1947 and 1949 entries.

I'm new here, but I've really enjoyed reading about the air races, and seeing the photo's people have posted, and I thought you might want to see these prints.
