A pilot departed Minden Easter Sunday to ride the Sierra wave in his Schleicher ASW-27 and encountered severe conditions over Reno. He lost a wing but was able to bail out and parachute to safety, landing on the parking structure of the hospital in downtown Reno with only minor injuries. The glider ended up losing both wings and came down in a parking lot without hurting anybody. One wing landed in a park a mile away and they are still looking for the other wing.
The reporting is even worse than what we normally get after an accident. It is almost painful to read or listen to the news.
This was the line that got me the most: The pilot was able to escape the aircraft before it came down and walked away with minor injuries.
No mention of how he escaped and managed to walk away.
I'm just glad the pilot is OK.

UPDATE 11:20 P.M. RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- Reno Police said a pilot is lucky to be alive Sunday night after a glider crash in downtown Reno Sunday afternoon.

Around 2:30pm Sunday, a glider crashed into a parking lot between the Easy 8 Motel and the Golden Flower Restaurant. The pilot was able to escape the aircraft before it came down and walked away with minor injuries.

Robert Spielman is all smiles after what could have been a disaster Sunday afternoon. His Schleicher ASW-27 Glider crashed into a parking lot near Fifth Street and Arlington Ave. "This could have been a lot worse, looks like the glider didn’t hit anybody or really anything maybe a car or two in the parking lot here,” said Lt. Patrol Robert Larson.

Police said Spielman took off from the Minden Airport Sunday morning, as he was returning Sunday afternoon, he encountered severe wind that sheared both wings off his airplane. "Apparently the pilot ran into some weather, from our initial details the aircraft began to fall apart."

But before Spielman's glider crashed, he was able to parachute out, landing on the St. Mary's Hospital roof. He sustained only minor injuries and looking grateful to walk away from the crash safe. "And the pilot survived with minor injuries, very blessed.”

Police said one of the aircrafts wings was found at Dick Taylor Memorial Park in Reno, about one and a half miles away from where the glider crashed. Nobody at the park was hurt and investigators are still searching for the second wing. Anyone who may come across it is asked to contact RPD.

Police are working with the FAA and NTSB into an investigation of the accident.

PDATE 4:09 P.M. RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) --

According to FAA's Public Affairs Manager, Allen Kenitzer, a Schleicher ASW-27 Glider, crashed under unknown circumstances in the Reno area.

RPD Officials say the location of the second wing is unknown.

Kenitzer says the pilot parachuted out and landed on the roof of the St. Mary's Hospital.

UPDATE 3:33 P.M. RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) – Lt. Robert Larson with the Reno Police Department tells News 4 that around 2:30 P.M. on April 5, 2015, a glider crashed near Arlington and 5th Street in Downtown Reno.

Larson says the pilot of the glider began his glide in Minden around 7 A.M. and experienced problems as wind picked up and a part of the glider started coming apart.

Officials say a wing from the glider fell off and landed at Dick Taylor Park in north Reno.

Before the rest of the glider crashed in a parking lot next to the Golden Flower Restaurant near St. Mary's Hospital, Larson says the male pilot was able to parachute out of the aircraft.

There are no major injuries reported and RPD is working with FAA officials to investigate the crash.
