I wasn't aware of the website about MAG 61 and will be contacting them soon. Thanks!

On with the pictures, please note, these are JPGs converted from the 600DPI TIFFs, I haven't corrected these at all -

Just FYI, this photo, titled Welcome Home is the July photo on MAG 61's 2008 Calendar.

Dave,

Thanks. I don't suppose it says which base they were returning to does it?

No, it doesn't...but my guess would be Emirau.

Different noses -

I find this photo very interesting. I know for a fact that VMB 611's PBJ-1D aircraft had the APS-3 radar mounted on the nose and were dubbed the hose nose and their D's were modified with the waist-gun positions. Their J's had the radar pods mounted on the right wing-tip.

I was not aware of any other VMB squadron that had the same D model configuration, but this photo of "108", to my knowledge, did not belong to VMB 611. Below is VMB 611's "MB 3" and you can see both aircraft have the same configuration.

In the full size picture -

there are actually 2 planes in formation with that nose.

Also, you can see that nose in -

on a PBJ numbered 109.

Dave,

I believe MB108 is a VMB-612 bird. I also recall VMB-413 had some of the search radar nose installations. As to the PBJ-1D with waist guns - a later block or blocks of 'D' models came from the factory with the waist position. I don't have my research material in front of me but, I do know the USMC received some of those as PBJ's.

I'm pretty sure at this point he didn't take all of these but, more likely some are his and some are from negatives he liked at the photo lab. To be honest, i don't care, I'm just loving seeing them.

Same photo, from Alan Carey's Leatherneck Bombers description:

Another view of PBJ squadron quarters on Emirau. Far left background are the officer quarters. Middle background are the enlisted aircrew quarters. Left middle are the enlisted quarters. Upper right is the mess hall. Lower right center is the PX and post office. (Courtesy of Bill Parks).

I am also certain he didn't take all of them as well.

I am pretty sure he took some of them but have no way of knowing which ones. He obviously had access to the negatives and made copies for himself, probably on Aug. 11, 1945 which is wwhen a lot of the pictures are dated.

A simular photo from Alan Carey's Leatherneck Bombers provides this description:

Chapel on Emirau (Courtsey of Henry Sory).

There is another photo of inside the chapel...it shows their "pews" were tree trunks.

A B-25 just doesn't look good with the reservoir tip. Aesthetically, better the pod on the wing.

In reviewing the photos, I think this one above helped me to identify that VMB 611's "MB 4" was either landing or on take-off at Emirau. Looks like same tree-line, piles of coral or rock formations (?), and runway surface.

MB 4 landing? (Bomb-Bay doors open and no rockets on the hard-points)

Craig,

This is a photo of one of VMB 611's PBJ-1D waist-gun...notice that the MG mount is in the center of the window. What do you think...a factory job or a possible field mod? I was not aware that some later "D" models had factory installed waist-gun positions (and with the top-turret aft, it sure must have been crowded).

I finished scanning in Frank's collection today. I'm pretty sure the large format pictures I scanned are official photographs that Frank made copies of from the negatives. I'm not sure which of the smaller format pictures he took or didn't.

These first two I am pretty sure he didn't take. In the first one, note how the outer wings are a different color from the inner...

These pictures I'm pretty sure he did take, they were labeled Samar, P.I. -

I have put up all of the pictures from the collection here -

http://spike.cs.umass.edu/~pbinder/fran ... _Kern.html

The links to the albums of pictures are on the top menu bar. I have grouped them as best I can and would appreciate any help identifying locations or people in the pictures.

Thanks,

Paul

Since I am somewhat new to this, I am not sure a) if I have the ability or b) the right to turn this into a sticky...

If someone could let me know via PM I'd be happy to comply.

Thanks,

Paul
