My first 35mm camera was an entry-level Minolta 3000i. I got a couple of lenses along the way, and when it was time to upgrade to digital, I purchased a second-hand Minolta 7D, their only digital offering. Eventually, Minolta Konica got out of the digital SLR business altogether and it looks like SONY now offers cameras that will work with my lenses. I don't have many and my main airshow lens is a Quantaray 135-400mm. I hate to buy new ones and so I am looking for recommendations for cameras that will operate with my lenses.

Anybody here shooting airshows with a SONY camera?

Should I just bite the bullet and grab that Nikon or Canon?

thanks,

Dave

Dave,

Just a note to let you know that I use a Sony SLR for all my photos. The body is the "Infinity 100" and so far I am pleased with it although this body has been replaced with a newer level. There is an optional Zeiss lens available for $1200 which I found on eBay for $ 400. If you look here in the "Photo Gallery" (three entries down) you will see my photoset for the on "Aerospace Museum, Sacramento, California". All those were shot with my Sony-Zeiss. Also, much further down the Photo Gallery file are my photosets for "Castle Air Museum, California" also taken with the Sony-Zeiss.

Dave,

Oops!! My Sony SLR is an ALPHA 100 not an Infinity 100 as I stated above. "Old Timer's Disease" got me again...

What kind of photos do you take? Static/ground or airshows/flypast?

Most anything will work for static, airshows require a better lens and better technique. I have good equipment and still take poor airshow photos after 30 years.

Thanks for the tip, John. I looked at an Alpha tonight.

I take static and flying shots. Lots more flying than static though. Because I don't like changing that big lens, I use a smaller basic digital camera for pictures of static aircraft.

I second the Canon with 100-400 combo! It is a phenomenal lens. I currently use a 6D body but am really looking at the 7Dmark2 for next year as it is a crop sensor ( extra reach ) and shoots at 10 frames/second.
