In the late 19th-early 20th century there was a railway fettler head ganger at Roma in central Queensland who was responsible for leading the gangs of men re-railing de-railed trains and repairing the tracks. The ground around Roma at that time was rather unstable and minor de-railments were quite common. His name was John Finnegan and he was apparently well known for his rather verbose incident reports.

Eventually his superiors in Brisbane became unhappy with the amount of money they were spending on Finnegans telegrams to Brisbane. After one particularly long report he was suitably chastised and told to reduce the word count. The next time a train went off the rails the incident report was short, sweet and to the point. The telegram read: Off again. On again. Gone again. Finnegan.
