Bobby Bowden just retired after coaching football at Florida State for 44 years, 2nd longest next to grandpa Joe Paterno at Penn State.

Some of Bowden's quotes are famous and funny, such as:
About coaching former star linebacker Reggie Herring, 1978-80; "He doesn't know the meaning of the word "fear". In fact, I just saw his grades and he doesn't know the meaning of a lot of words".

Football coaches can come up with some great ones, that cut right to the point.Famous Texas coach, Darrel Royal was once asked about this new guy Tommy Nobis, that no one could block. When asked how strong and fit Nobis was Royal simply said, "You couldn't pinch him with a pair of pliers." I don't think Shakespeare could make an image any clearer than that.
Once when going into the Cotton Bowl to play Notre Dame for the national championship ( back when Notre Dame was a winner) , Texas had a fine running team, but not much passing, and Notre Dame had a supposedly impregnable defense. Royal was asked if they might switch from a running game to passing offense. He said, " No, we're gonna dance with the ones that brung us " as in his younger days of attending small town dances. I was there that day and saw the game.
Those quotes were in public so I know they are true. There is another that I heard that I can't verify , but I think is true and it is a good line anyway.
Coach Royal was interested in recruiting a great high school running back from a small town in Louisiana, so he called the boy's coach. The high school coach was honored to get a call from a famous coach from a top university. When coach Royal asked all about the young mans size, speed, dedication, he got the best recommendations, all the while being very polite. Then the coach asked about if the player could go both ways, if he could play defense, in short was he a hard hitter? The small town coach got his point over very clearly, "Yes sir, Mr. Royal, he's good for two or three stretcher cases a game."
Writers from big Northern cities just loved this down home way of talking, and it made good press.

Just a few more, but not from Bobby Bowden - Bill Peterson, also an FSU coach:

From 1960-1979, "Coach Pete" Bill Peterson coached football at Florida State. His teams compiled a record of 62-42-11, and a winning percentage of .587. In the process, "Coach Pete" also became one of the greatest characters in American sports:

"I'm the football coach around here and don't you remember it."

"You guys line up alphabetically by height."

"You guys pair up in groups of three, then line up in a circle."

"I used to have this slight speech implement and couldn't remember things before I took the Sam Carnegie course."

"Men, I want you just thinking of one word all season. One word and one word only: Super Bowl."

"Just remember the words of Patrick Henry - 'Kill me or let me live.'"

"The greatest thing just happened to me. I just got indicted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. They had a standing observation for me."
