i was listening to my scanner at the airport recently. i hear ATC give clearance to a skywest CRJ to enter the pattern. ATC also notified the skywest flight that there was an aircraft 4miles ahead, on its 12'oclock. the skywest jet replied "that i could not find it on the visual, but saw it on the FISHFINDER" What in the hell is a fish finder??? :D

That's slang for the TCAS system which indicates the position of other aircraft relative to yours.

What Kyleb said. It looks a lot like a fishfinder for boats.

There should be a $1,000 fine for every pilot that says that on the radio.

Indeed. Thats one of ATC pet peeve sayings because if you don't have em visually you don't have em, plus it sounds dumb.

It would be one thing if someone said this once to be funny.

I think that if you knew me, you'd understand that my humor light is not inop, so it's not just me being an old snagglepuss.

That and "I've got him on the box..." One of those types is going to kill someone because they weren't looking outside.

Unfortunately, there are a good number of pilots who feel that autopilot and TCAS are primary modes of operation, and that hand-flying and visual lookout are backup plans.

TCAS is great... as long as both boxes are working.

Yes indeed, but some of the greatest aircraft do not have "boxes" - like the Cubs I fly.

I recall a proposal once to fit all airliners with devices in the nose that produce a heavy linear cloud enveloping the craft. it was to be a win-win. Light aircraft pilots avoid clouds, and airline pilots never look out the windows
