Sorry, Bill, Skybolt is right- an A&P could get in trouble for an unauthorized instrument repair(any instrument repair without proper credentials). FAR's prohibit it.

Just call a good instrument shop, and ask them how long it would take to replace the fluid- it shouldn't have to "sit on the shelf for a month" if the shop is any good.. You can probably have your friendly neighborhood A&P remove it, then you can run it over, and they'll fill it while you wait It is a petty simple operation- unless there is a leak- and then run it back to the A&P for reinstall... Shouldn't be more than a day down time if you hand carry it to the Instrument Shop.

Execpt that Bills airplane is certified in the "Experimental" category, and that means that he may service this if he wishes.

I'll point out one thing. I work for an instrument shop, and if that unit is radioactive, we are required by the EPA to not do a thing to it. From what I understand, the FAA doesn't care, but the EPA does. They have shown up before to check if we have anything with radium. The shop is also required to have a manual on the instrument before any work is allowed to be performed. We have to follow our own regs just like everyone else.

As for it not sitting on the shelf for a month "if the shop is any good". Just because a shop is good, doesn't mean they don't have a certain amount of lead time.
