One would think you could get some business to do the parts gathering for you, then just do a single freight container overseas to consolidate shipping costs.

Yes that would be one way or I could find a friendly Wixer to help!

Its great to do your homework and figure things out.
The more you hunt and watch the better you can be at finding things at really good prices.
There is probably some good stuff and people to meet closer in Oz.
Read up and ask questions like you are doing now.
As stated plan on some road trips across Oz and the US and hit Sun and Fun or Oshkosh where there are some flea markets where you can start finding parts.
Also check into what the official rules are from your Civil Aviation Folks for how this has to be done and who you will have to use to sign off work. I know in the UK the CAA seems to be horrible to deal with. It would be bad to put a ton of work into something that your CAA won't let you use.
BE WARY OF STUFF AND THE CONDITION IT IS REPRESENTED TO BE IN!!
I have had issues with poor photos and "All you need to do is scuff it and paint it and bolt it on" which turned into a delivery on some bent, mashed and corroded hunk of junk which eats up your time to get it returned. You being out in the bottom of the earth would really suck if you bought something from the other side of the earth and this happened.
The trip and collect up here in the US would ship out pretty easy to throw it in a small shipping container yourself when ready to leave and then have it trucked to your door back home handling the arrangements your self. It's some money but would be cheaper than other methods.
It cost more to truck a P-51 wing from the east coast of the US to the west coast than to ship an entire P-51 from the UK to Chino Calif a couple years back.
Some of my friends who are now Warbird owners started small and kept at it so it is possible.
Good Luck.
Rich

Brandon is right. It is like the old saying - ask the man who owns one. From time to time, you see a project that says 98% complete, except firewall forward. The cost of that firewall forward is well in excess of $100,000 now. If you don't believe me, price it out. The biggest mistake I ever made was buying a Harvard that looked complete. Little bits missing from the control shelve quickly added up to over $1k. Replacing the pulleys is over $1K. New rod ends are over $1K. It had a tailwheel, but it turned out to be an early model someone swapped out. Getting all that right cost over $3,000. This list goes on and on. Don't believe me? Price it out for yourself. I would never do another T-6 unless it was 100% complete to start with, and I am not even finished with my current one.

Yes you're right after step # 3 you make you $50k profit for installing it. (A pretty easy job, and you'd be bleeding somebody dry.) If someone told me it cost that much in parts, then they have more money than brain cells.
