I was actually told (about 5 yrs ago)by a lady with the FAA that if I bought parts from different sources, and rebuilt and assembled those parts, I could register as a amateur built. But, I had to have bills of sale from the purchase of these parts showing that I bought parts of a airplane, and not an airplane! Furthermore I would need documentation of what I did in the rebuild process.

You obviously talked with someone in the MIDO, but that applies if you classify it as a plane built from parts under the jurisdiction of the MIDO. If you go through the MIDO be prepared to go through some serious grief, and by prepared for a lifetime event.

On the other hand, you can go through the FSDO, and you also don't have to tell them you had to get the parts, since you're experimental. You'll also be able to finish!

In any case, the DAR or the other g-men will ask for your log book used for building the plane.

One thing I would do would be to put an R-2000 on it to clean it up. .

HA!

My friend, if there's one thing an R-2000 isnt, its clean. Come and help us try to stop the oil leaks. I firmly believe that the R-2000 is merely a complicated set of moving parts working in unison for the explicit purpose of filtering oil through it.
