Been doing it for 20 years.

Here is a good place to start.

Hi ML:

So how expensive would it be to do a major change, like changing a powerplant to a different model, etc.? Is it cost prohibitive?

That is what I specialize in, in jets that is.

Very expensive generally, depending on the program. If there is more than a 10% increase in thrust/HP it is a major program and headache.

Give me an idea of what you want to do and I can give you an idea of the complexity.

Unfortunately, the info is proprietary. However I can hint at it. If the engine is built in Chicom or Russia and has similar weight and H.P. can it be fitted to an American aircraft w/o out serious financial damage?

Could be two different programs here.

If the engine is not already certified by the FAA then that needs to be done. Then the certification of the installation to the airframe.

Similar configuration, operation and HP would help make the program easier, but with the way the FAA is currently you typically cannot use the original certification basis for the airplane.

In other words if you are planning on installing an different engine on a airplane that was certified under part 23 rules from 40 years ago, you cannot use those same old rules (it used to be that way with the FAA). FAA is now typically making you meet the current FARs, and this can cause alot of problems with older aircraft and engines.

PM me some more information and I can give you some better information. If you are talking recips, I have no desire to steal any information from you.

I manage about 400 STCs and 1 Type Certificate currently, and have certified probably 200 of those. Everything from small programs like baggage door openers to installing the latest Williams jet engines on older airplanes.
