On the Merlin-powered P-51's there is a matrix of 32 holes on the lower part of the forward fuselage, about midway between the scoop and the leading edge. They can be clearly scene in the Gunfighter photo below.

I'm wondering if someone could please tell me what these holes are for.

Those panels with the holes in them cover the air filters for the alternate induction air.
You either could have direct air to the carb. coming from the little scoop just under the prop. spinner, or you could select filtered air and a door would move inside the induction trunk to allow the filtered air in.
On some Mustangs around today these filters have been removed so you may see some Mustangs flying around with these panels without the holes in them. Or the filters completely removed and still use the panels with the holes in them.
I hope this helps!

Ah...alternate air. Thank you, that does help.

The ext holes are for filtered air. There is actually another panel that opens on the interior for heated air for 3 positions total. Ram, filtered and warm.
