In need of Wright J-5 parts!

Thu Sep 11, 2014 6:50 pm

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, so mods, feel free to move as required.

Many on WIX are familiar with John Norman from his tenure as the owner of the Hurricane AM274 project. Since he sold the Hurricane earlier this year, he has been steadily making amazing progress on his replica of the Spirit of St Louis. He has run into a snag that could derail the whole project, however. While he was inventorying the parts for his original Wright J-5, he discovered that all of the valves, springs, and wrist pins are for a Continental R-670, not a J-5. Since the goal is to fly with the J-5, and another engine is unacceptable, He needs to find these parts! Does anyone know of a stash of Wright J-5 parts, or know anyone who as some? John would love to hear from you! Please contact him at www.JNEaircraft.com

What a great project! Many of the "Spirit" replicas aren't quite right in one way or another...usually the cowlings are "off" or some other details make the plane look a bit wrong (not that I've ever attempted to build one, I'm sure it's difficult.). But this project looks pretty darn accurate. Good luck finding the engine parts.
Like to see more pictures of the plane...

Has anyone relied about the engine parts? Maybe you should try the main page for more visibility. There must be some J-5 stuff out there. Old Rhinebeck maybe...?

Found a nice update on the plane here:

He has gotten a couple of replies, but so far, it appears as if they have led to dead ends. As for the update on Antique Airfield, I wrote that and sent it into them. All of those photos on there are mine, I am currently the photographer for the Spirit project.

I found this...an entire engine. Not sure if it's still available. 60K...

That is an absolutely gorgeous engine. Wow. I would like to see it sitting at the front of a Spartan C3-165!
