There are 4 possible modern alloys. Do you have a print you can share that would give us some indication as to what the part is, and whether it’s structural or not? That’s going to help determine what alloy would be an approprate substitution.

Navy 47A3, Federal QQ-A-353, Alloy 17S (Aluminum 2017 alloy)

QQ-A-353 is "ALUMINUM-ALLOY (AL-17), (ALUMINUM-COPPER-MAGNESIUM-MANGANESE); PLATES, SHEETS, AND STRIPS"

Would be quite interesting to see what he’s working on. I’m familiar with 2017 being used for rivets. Building something out of sheet or bar would be quite different. While it’s a weldable alloy, one can only do so via a spot welder.
