NAS Pensacola

Wed May 06, 2015 3:09 pm

Hello. William Propsner here. I was stationed at NAS Pensacola from 1971- 77
Dad was stationed and retired from Ellyson Field in 73, before it was shut down.
I now live in Artesia, New Mexico. Work at the local airport as a supervisor.
I looked at the website that has the photos of NAS Pensacola and noticed a wrong date on one of the photos.
The photo shows the USS Lexington docked over by port services where it usually is. And in the background opposite the Lex is the coastal minesweeper, USS Kingbird. First year I was in, I was stationed on the Kingbird.
However, the date of the photo is wrong. It's not 1978. It's more like 1969 0r 1970. The Kingbird was scrapped in '73 and towed to NC. After boot camp, I was stationed aboard the Kingbird....and having aviation colors on my stripes, this worried me. Anyway, We had meetings aboard the ship for about 3 months, then while the ship was being readied for scrapping, we had our meetings at Ellyson Field. It was sad to learn that the Kingbird was indeed scrapped and nothing remains of her. She was a really nice ship, albeit old and worn out.
Anyway, just thought i'd get you the year of the photo a little more correct. It was not 1978. More likely it was around 1970.
God Bless.
Oh, also looking for anyone who knew me, or my dad, AFMC Jacob Propsner. Master Chief Propsner.
