Staff Sargent Walter E. Hein, the Ball Turret Gunner on the original crew of B-17G 'Thunderbird', passed away December 1, 2011. To honor his memory, Lone Star Flight Museum's B-17G 'Thunderbird' flew a Memorial Flight on December 3, 2011. Carried in it's Ball Turret was an American Flag in commeration of his service to the Nation.
