Iowa’s Oldest Veteran Passes Away Loren Greiner, 108

Iowa's oldest veteran passed away, Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the age of 108 years and 24 days.

Loren Greiner, of Emmetsburg, served in the Army in WWII where he earned five bronze stars. He was in the sixth wave of Omaha Beach on D-Day and continued on the front lines through Normandy, Paris, and Germany. He was among the liberators of the German Ohrdruf concentration camp.

Before and after the war Loren was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture where he worked on land and water conservation issues. For about 30 years he was a Soil Scientist for the USDA Conservation Service.

After retirement in 1968, Loren continued to advocate for clean water as an essential part of the environment. He was a County Sanitarian, and taught both high school and college classes.

At the age of 94, Loren presented a poster and paper at the Midwest Ground Water Conference in Fargo, ND. Greiner had degrees in chemistry and agronomy from Iowa State University where he was the third of five generations to attend.
