Herbert M. Heilbrun, B-17 pilot and one half of the subject of the book Black and White Airmen: Their True History passed away on 18 December 2020. He had just celebrated his 100th birthday on October 11th. He joins his best friend and Tuskegee Airman John Leahr, who passed away 27 March 2015.

There's plenty of information out there about Herb and John's story – including an Air & Space Magazine article, Veterans History Project interview, an interview for the National World War II Museum, a local news documentary, a story on NBC, an A&E segment, and a series of pictures – so instead of explaining the whole story again here, I want to touch on a lesser known connection. Herb and John's story is a large part of why the Tri-State Warbird Museum exists. It was after inviting them to talk at his son's school that our founder, David O'Maley, Sr., was motivated to move forward with his plans to found our museum. Herb was also a big part of the local EAA Warbirds of America chapter, the Cincinnati Warbirds. They had a flag dedicated to him that they had flown on multiple aircraft in his honor.

Your friendship with John here on Earth may have been unfairly limited, but I know you'll have plenty of time to talk up there.
