The report also says that US destroyers fired 369 5-inch shells into the hull during the attempts to scuttle her.

That’s an awful lot of big gunfire. 5-inch translates to 127mm.

Ill bet a dollar to a donut that the aluminum unknown object is a Japanese wing...… wing tip to right of pic, aileron appears to be missing and the front spar rotated 90 degrees. leading crushed aft and separated at wingtip rib...…. just a guess 8)

also, this is my first post. been a long time lurker and absolutely blown away with the Lexington find and now this latest one. just fantastic.

First of all, welcome Chris.
I was thinking something similar but I just couldn't visualize it.
With your description I can see it.
Is the red what is left of a "Meatball"?

The pictures are stunning. Can't believe the advancement in underwater technology. Wish my Uncle (US Navy, Destroyer Escort, Pacific, WWII) was alive to see this. He'd be fascinated...

Since the moment the photos were posted, I've thought the one photo clearly shows the wing of a Japanese aircraft too (with the red "meatball"). Pretty fascinating to have not only found the Hornet, but the remains of one of the Japanese aircraft that took part in the battle (if that is indeed a wing section, as it appears).

There was some thought that the wreckage with the Hinomaru (meat ball) might have come from the val that hit the island, then became dislodged on the way down? Looking past the section of wing, it kinda looks like a landing gear strut minus the wheel and wheel pant. Of course the gross tonnage in opinions and hypothesies on Social Media far out weighed the wreck at the bottom LOL!
