Hi all

About atwo months ago I bought a new Canon 300D and took it to the Philippines and got it run over by a Backhoe!!1

I just gordered the replacement which I am bringing to the UK next month - any tips on the use of these- I am a fairly experiance operator with Canons and Nikons in 35 mm but not digital.

1. avoid heavy machinery this time.

2. treat it the same as the film version but let yourself have some fun and try different things ( except the delete function ) till you find what works for you.

3. always get more memory.

4. never delete anything till you are absolutely certain you do not need it which is AFTER you down;oad everything.

aside from that. you have me jealous even though I have a lot of canon gear I don't have a digital canon ...... yet. just a little cheapy point and shoot.

John,

Had a 300D for about 6 months now. Agree with Jeff, and to go with his number 3,
more memory, you might want to spring for a back up battery also.
A lens in the range of 70-300 is a good compliment to the 18-55 that comes with the kit.
I think the kit lens is pretty good though and one of my first shots
with the camera, seen below, was taken with it.
Good luck with DRebel and watch out for those stray
stealth backhoes.

Bill

Hi Guys tahnks for the advice .......................

I will avoid machinery this time but hey you should have seen what was distracting me at the time ................ hopefully we all will soon - quite a trip.

Nice photo of the P51 I just love that machine - is this the one that had the tragic accident - a real tragic occurence. I was so sorry to hear about that - he will be a real loss.

Anyway I am looking forward to the new toy and unfortunately you will all now be subjected to a barrage of Boomerangs ( or is it a herd ) and other stuff as I come to grips with the digital age.

Kindest regards
John Parker

No. The P-51C about is Kermit Week's machine. The one that was lost last May was the CAF machine.

:?:
Are there other lenses available for the canon EOS 300D? For example a 400mm zoom, or is the 70-300 the maximum available for this camera?

Hi

I think the 300 is the highest standard type lens but there are others available much higher- for a price.............

The other thing to remember is the multiplier effect with Digital Camera SLRs the factor is X1.5 so what this means in effect is that a 300lens from a standard Canon EOS 35 mm Camera when fitted to a 300D becomes a 450 lens etc so this means that your old lens is well worth recycling especially for aviation where size often does count !!

I am not really very knowlegable about all of this - I just read a few books and so I am now an armchair expert!!!

Regards
John P

Thanks Setter, I just wonder if other lenses (other than canon made) would fit on for example the 300D. I wonder?

Yes, other brand lenses will work on Canon 300D, if they have a Canon mount.
Tele-converters (1.4 or 2.0) seem to have problems.
Crop factor on this camera is 1.6 so say a 100mm lens would appear as a 160mm.
Also for anybody about to buy you may want to look at the new
Canon 20D to be released next month or the 10D it's replacing.
Way better autofocus settings for tracking aircraft than the 300D.
(Yeah also more money)

For plenty of info on 300D visit this forum. I've learned alot here.

Good Luck and as one of our WIX photo experts Eric has told me
on occasion "Stay Focused"

I just saw the 20D, Looks like a great camera. Now if they would only drops a couple hundred off the prices.

Or Minolta would get on the wagon and come out with something, I have those lenses.

With regard to lenses, any Canon EOS lens should fit and function on any Canon EOS camera although some of the special functions may not always work. For the 300D the special small-frame EF-S lenses will also fit.

The big issue with non-Canon lenses is generally Sigma as they do not licence the mount but, instead, reverse engineer to suit. This has frequently resulted in older Sigma lenses being incompatible with newer Canon cameras. To their credit they have normally provided a free upgrade to the lens firmware to move them forward by one generation but more than this is normally not possible.

Unless you are taking a laptop with you, I suggest buying an Image Tank G2 to download into.

http://www.image-tank.com/

You should be able to pick up a 40gig unit for the cost of 1 gig of compact flash cards.

Buy the extra flash cards as well.

And an extra battery.

And some more flash cards.

Cheers,

Brett

If you go Canon - whatever model I don't think you will be sorry. I was and am a real Nikon fan but the difference between the two brands in results doesn't justify the extra you spend on the equivalent Nikon.

Have fun with whatever you choose

Kindest regards
John
