Heard a rumor that the aircraft was substantially damaged a week or two ago. Can anyone substantiate or disprove this rumor?

If the P-39 was involved in an incident I would exepect it to have shown up in the FAA's incident reporting system. I haven't seen anything involving a Bell fighter, or in fact any Bell aircraft at all for quite some time. This would seem to rule out any sort of operational incident, so hopefully this rumor is completely unfounded.
