Warbird Information Exchange

As the months roll by, can't help but wonder what is happening with these grounded bombers. Are they just sitting mothballed at Greybull? Thanks.

Hi Rob - Thanks for the response. My intent was that it is worrisome that a group of WW11 heavy bombers in flying condition are just sitting up in Wyoming with maybe no future. If H&P had not saved them for firefighting, Privateers would probably be very, very rare warbirds. I hope some way they can be saved for the warbird community, if not allowed to fight fires again. Just seemed to me that there was no urgency about their survival.. If they end up being scrapped, to me that would be a tragedy.

Why will they be scrapped? Why can't they be ferried somewhere for static display in a museum?

Rob - Why in the world would Gene insist they be scrapped?

That's a relief! I was hoping that Gene wanting the Privateers scrapped was a typo.

I already spoke with the EAA about this subject, and evidently a group of FAA engineers is reviewing the wing failures and trying to determine a solution. This is typical after any type of accident. Case in point the T-34, Beech 18, and Bonanza spar AD's.

I contacted Long Star Air Museum in Tx about their progress on the PB4Y they are resorting. They made is sound like the whole project was in limbo on the wing spar info from the FAA. They are moving forward BUT...

I so want to see one in the air, I just love Navy Aircraft.
