Minor correction: I believe the helicopter would be a HH-3E, not F.
The "F" was a Coast Guard variant.

Just so happens we had a group of Coasties flying the H-3's over there doing rescues. LT Jack Rittichier's remains were recovered a while back. I flew with one of them back in the early 80's.

For combat ops, they flew USAF aircraft...so HH-3Es, not non-combat configured H's....which lacked armor plating, the drop tanks and AAR capability.
And, correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the CG pilots on exchange tours with the Air Force...or are you saying CG provided entire crews?
