Warbird Information Exchange

I found this photo and it struck me as odd. As far as I knew the only other countries, besides the U.S., that operated the F-84F were NATO countries: France, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, West Germany, Greece and Turkey. I was wondering if anyone had any information about this aircraft? Thanks

Details: The MiG-15 fighters (actually Republic F-84 Thunderjets) depicted in the film carry the unadorned red star that marks the military aircraft of the Soviet Union rather than the red star within the red and blue circles marking of the North Korean air force. This is very wrong for while Soviet pilots did fly for the North Koreans from Chinese bases the Soviet Union did not want this fact publicized for obvious reasons. The Soviet pilots were even forbidden from speaking Russian over the radio (a rule which was broken as soon as they entered combat). The MiG-15 fighters flown in combat during the Korean War carried North Korean air force markings.

That seems the most likely. Good call. My only thing is that this aircraft carries full blown Soviet markings not just misidentified National insignia. From the Hammer and Sickle on the tail to the CCCP on the forward Fuselage. More than likely this Thunderstreak was used on the film making. Thanks.

for some reason my mind keeps thinking of an old john wayne movie, I think it was john wayne anyway, about a female pilot defecting to america to convince an american pilot to defect with an aircraft and they end up doing that and then defecting to america as he hadn't actually defected or something.

for some reason that aircraft makes me think of that film.

The John Wayne film is called Jet Pilot. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I do recall they used T-33s and F-89s as Soviet aircraft.

Jeffery, That was Jet Pilot. They used T-33s, an F-89 and an X-1 as Russian aircraft. F-84s may have been in it also but I can't remember right off hand. Guess I'll have to watch the movie again.

You mean Jet Pilot? Horrid movie but great footage of F-86s, T-33s and the B-29 / X-1 combo. I remember something about F-84s in that movie but not in Russian colors...

I kinda thought Janet Leigh was the highlight of that film myself. I'm as warbird happy as anyone, but you have to keep it in perspective

Another movie that might have had the Red F-84F would be "The McConnell Story" with Alan Ladd and June Allyson. Got some nice F-86 stuff!
