Greetings from Berlin

Fri Nov 19, 2004 11:05 am

Last night in country, Berlin is a curious place. The utter devastaion we wrought on this city is evident everywhere. The entire city is new. What we did not destroy in the bombings the Russians blew up in celebration. All of the structures that are standing that are "period" have been reconstructed. Almost all traces of Nazi infrastructure is gone. Berlin is definetly a city growing towards the future. The reunification of of Berlin is also bringing on public workk projects of unprecedented scale. Much of the east has not been touched since the war, only drab housing projects stand as a testament to the cold war. cya back in the states

Hi
has anyone got any up to date pictures of the DTM? I went there a couple of years ago only to find the aviation section was closed as it was being rebuilt. I'd be interested in any pictures of The Taube from WW1 they have there.
Many thanks
Andy.

PS Someone on Key had a picture of the C-47 on the roof there as his avatar. Has that person survived the shipwreck?

The new museum is apparently not open to the public until mid next year.

They're certainly taking their time to get it open. I wonder wha it will contain. Perhaps Mike J might be able to contribute here as I think he went before the refurbishment began.
Cheers

I am not sure what the delay is..funds no doubt ! . I know they will have the following...Me 110F, Me109E, Ju 87 wreck, Ju88G, He111H and Fw200 Condor when they are finished, Horten H11L tailless glider, Klemm 135, Arado 79, Fi-156 (Swedish), Ju 52/3m, Noord 1002 (as Me108), NordNC702 ( as Siebel 204), and Etrich-Taube.
They are also hoping to expand to Tempelhof airport when I closes in a few years as some of the larger aircraft will need more space, not to mention what they still have in storage I suppose. Might give them a chance to look for those rumoured underground hangars full of water as well

Fw-200 ''Condor'' flew from Berlin to Tokyo in 1938.

I was in Berlin, 3 weeks after the Wall came down and we walked around the Olympic Stadium and on the outer walls, the faint outline of the Swastika was still (only) just visible!

I also remember that there were remains of a Cathedral near the city centre, which had been left as a memorial to the dead!

Is it still there?

Another thing that I remember of my visit was the smell of burnt oil. West Berlin being clean air but as we entered east Berlin, the smell from the 2-stroke engines was almost like walking into a wall.

Still, with the only car available being the wonderful Trabbie.

Oh the wonder sound of the 2-stroke engine........can't you hear it now?
