Is you friends L-4 a real L-4? It almost looks like a modified PA-12.
Pilot's up front, rear window doesn't look quite right even for a Cub.

I agree....I was very happy to see more and varied classics this year at Gennie. In years past you would get the Moth or Stampe...but the variety and quality this year was impressive. That stinson was beautiful. I love the all silver civil Moth....the one the guy from NYC started to restore in his studio! He landed in the squall on Friday, in the driving rain and wind! I was in the Top Gun tent sitting next to Manfred Radius and Freddy Cabanas, when I heard Freddy remark "He landed in this!!?"
Can't wait til next year.

Thanks for the photo of the Taperwing. I was flying it, and since I was only recently assigned the airplane, that's the first flying picture of me in it I've seen. Very nice!
The silver Moth is a Moth Major, a rare dH variant. It differs in having straight wings (that fold), a later Gipsy, and a plywood (rather than steel tube) fuselage. It came along a bit later.

I think it is a Piper J-5. Anyone get the N number?
The real s/n: 42-79553 was a civil Piper J-5 impressed for use by the U.S. military.

I've learned something today. J-5/PA-12's were designated L-4F (75hp)
and L-4G(100hp).

So far I was able to get Fridays pictures uploaded to the net. Here is a sample and the link to more. I’m working on Saturdays and should get them posted soon.
The weather was a bit touchy when it came to clouds and a few rain showers on Friday and Saturday. Sunday was a total washout (I had the WIX breakfast at Denny’s so I did not actually show up at the field but that is what it looked like). I can wait until next year!
And a shot of the selection of beer that was provided by Tailhook Brewery this year. One the stock was placed in the main tent Saturday night it went fast! Next year I might need to bring more beer. Plus I need to ditch the water-soluble glue as the labels started to fall off.

A few minor corrections.
August-
Nothing custom about the Stearman 4/NC488W that is the way it was originally delivered to Stanavo.

The L-4F is a J-5a, the L-4G is a J-5b, the major difference between the J-5b and the PA-12 was that the shock cords were internal in the PA-12, the only PA-12's that the USA purchased were 6 in 1951 for the Mutual Aid Program.

You are correct, I was referring to the most visible difference between a J-5 Cub Cruiser and PA-12 Super Cruiser.
