I'm starting to post so much, I'm going to start foaming at the mouth!

Anyway, I heard that an AT-9 was found in New mexico crashed, and another was excess at the AFM, not including the one on display. The excess one was scrapped in spite of another museum literally begging for it.

Hmmn, I'm starting to hear about a lot of bad stuff coming from the AFM.

Oh just hang around, there are enough people here that love to bash the museum that will keep you reading for days. Some view it as a hobby. Some people golf.

Golf is NOT a verb ! People play golf or they bash the museum ! Sheesh !!

Oh, and sometimes you bash the museum while you're playing golf.
:D
On the other hand, if the museum didn't do some of the things they've done there might not be so much bashing !

I rest my case. :D

Hey ! Iwasn't bashing the museum, I was bashing you for using golf as a noun ! :D

Happy to post it, Eric. I thought it was a neat photo. Does anyone know if there are any other crashed remnants out there, or potential airframes? Since it was a training aircraft, and reportedly difficult to fly, it would seem logical that there would be some additional crash sites with the potential for substantial remains. Especially since it was just a training aircraft and might not have been bothered with for recovery by the AAF during the war. Anyone?

Even if the excess AFM bird was crap, all people with a true passion, such as Eric, need is a data plate and a couple 'O' parts... Bang! Boom! you have a flying warbird. No need to destroy ANY part of a rare bird. 2 cents

Kevin,

Try searching the WIX database for more Jeep stuff. I know there was a thread with photos of AT-9 remains a year or two ago.

You mentioned the flying characteristics--Bob Armstrong, who later went on to fly B-17s with the 381st Bombardment Group, told me that when he went through multi-engined advanced the students were not allowed to fly the AT-9 without an instructor. It was not too tough to handle when everything was working, but he said things deteriorated pretty rapidly when you shut an engine down.

I know some of the guys in restoration, and the wrok that they do. I won't say that it is impossible that there was a ton of quality stuff left, but I do find it hard to believe. Does any one know the history of the one that is at Pima under restoration?

Mack as the AT-9 at PASM is called is what remains of a wartime crash in the Mountains north of Tucson, do not know and could not find anything more out in my 3.5 years at the place. It was hauled down for scrap as were many wrecks in the 50-60's. Not sure what will happen with her but Pima is really steping up it's restoration efforts the last few years. Such a beautiful bird.

Here are a few pics I snapped of the AT-9 at Pima back in '04. I don't know if any work has been done on her yet, but judging by their past efforts, there's more than enough there to make a complete aircraft.

Thanks for putting those up, Steve. There is really more there (and in better condition) than I remembered. People have certainly started with less!
