Posting links - Advisory

Sat Jun 06, 2009 5:00 am

Mod post: Dear All,

Due to the behaviour of a poster not currently with us (membership under 'review' by Scott) some people have gained the impression that any links are frowned upon. As I understand it, that's not the case, and links are welcome, if handled appropriately.

The guidelines are:
- The subject heading states what it's about.

- No 'blind links' - i.e. put what it's about in the message field as well as the link - add a comment, good, bad, why, something to look for is good too.

- No flooding the forum with loads of single-post blind links and then refusing to change your behaviour when asked to (this was the original problem).

- Credit linked content (where permissible to hotlink or equivalent).

Hope that's clear?

Finally, I'm not Scott, this is just my understanding of acceptable behaviour. Scott's mileage may vary. ;)

Cheers,

Thanks for the clarification. Everytime I posted a link I was thinking I was going to get the boot!

Sounds like good guidelines, as with everything else I reserve the right to change these if needed as well as make exceptions in certain cases. Thanks James.

I especially like the part about clear subject headings. It's probably a pet peeve but I find myself highly irritated by subject headings like:

"I have a question...."

Well, this is a hopeless little thread ..... it seems to be about COMMON SENSE.

Links, attachments, anything outside of the body of an email or post needs to be clearly declared. Period. What's hard to understand about that? What? You never had a virus/malware infestation before? Really??

Subject Line/Header is a pet peeve of mine, too. Come on folks, EVERYTHING posted in a forum such as this instantly becomes part of the collective wisdom, a potentially valuable additional piece in the archives that is subject to being searched for by future visitors to this, or whatever site you post on. The header is the first thing the search function looks for! That alone is a pretty darn good reason to attach high priority to its importance.

Unfortunately, seems incredibly few people ever "get it" .......... alas. :Hangman:

Sorry, the above was probably more of a rant than a post, but what the heck, it was a lotta fun to tap out. Also, I've been on the net since almost the very beginning, and have done too many forums, e-groups, usernet groups, listservs, etc., etc., to count, on a wide variety of subjects, and I'm here to tell you that WIX is as good as it gets. The instant I became aware that you can add to the ol' tip jar thru Paypal to help make it worthwhile to whoever brings it to us, I subscribed.

:D Sound like pretty sensible rules to me James and Scott. Kurt, I'd like to think such things are but commonsense but unfortunately in this day and age of what I call "meism", commonsense seems to be becoming a very uncommon and rarely even thought about commodity. I just wish some of those I have the displeasure to work with would grow a brain and get a lick of this commonsense. We have a cruisey job, a good boss and still they aren't satisfied. Some of them wouldn't last five minutes in some of the places I've worked in the past.

Cheers,
Ross.

Posting of Links void where prohibited by Law. Additional restrictions may apply. Individuals need not be over 18 to enter. Not available in all 50 States (if anyone believes there are more than 50 States- and some do-hit escape and return to school). Batteries not included.

Failure to follow the instructions quoted could result in :axe: :Hangman:

Posting just to drop blind links is a pretty low form of posting. On another site I had this guy that would constantly link back to his blog or copy paste from his blog. We finally ended up getting rid of him.
