I think it should be painted like an Army A-25! Poetic justice (when you consider all the SBDs and the CAF Helldiver that are actually Army airframes. :)

Hi The lift tubes on an SB2C, the front one is located just below the wind screen it is the same tube that holds the rudder pedals to the airframe. The rear lift tube is about4 feet behind the turret ring area close to the bottom of the tail area look for a 2 inch hole on each side of the airframe DO NOT try to lift by the tube only from the holes in the sides much like the lift tube at the rear of a T-6, hope this helps any questions call me @ 651 757 7375 good luck Thanks Mike

First I've heard this - I thought it was a Navy (NAS Glenview) airframe; was it an A-25 that was taken over by the Navy? Baugher doesn't describe it that way.

This was a joke, because so many of the AAF aircraft (like SBD's) have been painted as Navy birds.

I think that he is referring to the fact that the CAF's SBD, the one in the northeast, and Kermit's that is tentatively slated (from what I understand) to be painted as an SBD are all actually A-24s.

Hi

I would not be surprised if the airframe doubles in weight from the silt. I seem to recall that the P47 Thunderbolt recovered from Austria in 2005 was double its dry weight due to the fine silt that was everywhere. Something like 17 tonnes on the crane.

Trouble underwater is how do you remove silt? Would pressure washing it down as it is gradually lifted help? Basically you want to get the sediment into a solution and get it out. Least there are no zebra mussels etc.

Hopefully the airframe will come up today so all the families can see it.

It seems Taras and A&T are not use to working a 'normal' day when there is still daylight that can be used in the salvage. Seems the water authority are the ones deciding on the working day and when everything has to be packed up for the day (according to the local press).

Glad they are not rushing - plan it correctly and it will be fine. We all know what happens when some of these weakened airframe shave been brought into the air - significant airframe failure - Fw200 Condor from Norway springs to mind.

Good luck A&T.

Mark

This is the best news photo ever taken. :)

Image

(For the uninitiated, those are 1/18th scale models- a Bf 109G-6/R6 on the left, and an Fw 190D-9 on the right. What they have to do with a Helldiver, I don't know but I LIKE THIS KID'S STYLE. :D)
