The Korean conflict has always been a tragic fascination, as well as the years just before and after Korea. (The Vietnam era included). These Wars and conflicts have never received the attention and coverage they rightfully deserve. At least no where near the attention WW2 receives. So here's a few photos that may interest some of you. Not a B&W photo in the batch. All great images of the 1950's, 60's and 70's. Sources, NMNA archives, Library of Congress archives, SDASM archives. LIFE archives.

Many photos here, (and hope you don't mind) are not in any particular order as well as most dates omitted. I'll add a few USAF images as well.

Man! that is one LOUD QF-9  I think that PANTER of CAG 2 is sliding past Mt. Fuji. I agree that the Korean War ear is poorly represented so I'm encouraged to see posts like this and other contributions here.

Awesome - I had never seen VMF-323 corsairs with that nose art! Also love the Cougar in China Lake colors!

Another GREAT set of vintage photos, Mark! Thanks for sharing.

One minor correction to note - the faded Cougar near the beginning would be a QF-9H (not QF-9A) if it was originally an F9F-7 model. The F9F-6 became the F-9G, the F9F-7 became the F-9H and the F9F-8 became the F-9J.

Keep 'em coming!

Every time I see an F-82 I think:

"I have the controls and I'm going left"
"NO! I have the controls and I'm going RIGHT!"
"NO DARN IT... LEFT!"
"I SAID RIGHT!"

(I believe only one guy had controls and the other the radar... but I can imagine the conversation!)

I like that there are a number of Avengers in the Korean War pics. While they were mostly used as transports and hacks, I know a few of them flew into the emergency airstrips during the Chosin Reservoir battle. There seems to be an almost complete dearth of material on the Avenger in Korea. Most Avenger histories end their detailed operations at 1945 and then have the following blurb "The Avenger remained in U.S. Navy service until 1954", without mentioning any details of that service.

Mark,

Thanks for posting the photos. Also, I sent you a PM. OOOPPPSSS. I didn't see your PM in response to my original PM

Does anyone know if any SB2Cs saw any action in Korea?

Thanks,

Mac
