For those of you who asked. These are what I found. From the Fold3 archives (US Air Force photos) here's several photos that show some interesting (and tragic) combat scenes. Most have been posted before and some may be new to a few of you. As much as these old airplanes are interesting and a pleasure to see up close and see fly, I for one never forget why they were created and what they were intended for, as well as the sacrifices made by so many while flying these airplanes. (If anyone is offended by any particular photo just let me know and I'll take it / them down)

All I can say is WOW! I've never seen that picture before. That's impressive that the plane made it back. Speaks volumes of the toughness of the B-25 and the crew flying it on that day.

Thanks again for posting some incredible pictures Mark.

Another great selection of photos, Mark! The B-17 bomb explosion is covered in detail here:

The coverage includes a photo of RAMCI81 (Paul Bellamy, who was responsible for the memorial) wearing a suit!

A Messerschmitt Me 110 Attacks A Formation Of 91St Bomb Group Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses

That's actually an RAF operated 110, on a training mission with a group from the RAF that also included a 109, also painted in RAF colors. I have other shots from that series, from a 91st vet who'd loaned me his photo album in the early 90s. He's since passed on but I have a book of copies of the photos I got and in the original print you can make out the RAF rondell on the 110.
Lots of photos get used in books as 'action' shots when they aren't, then the history gets lost. For example, this well-known series of shots was NOT from a mission, it was a photo shoot, and the cameraman was shooting from a 91st BG B-17, co-piloted by the same vet I just mentioned. http://www.f-16.net/attachments/p_51_ww ... py_188.jpg
He shot movie film from his position which I transferred to VHS several years ago, i need to get it onto DVD eventually...
