Now those are warbirds looking the way they should (IMHO).

Cheers,

Part 4
(this is an easy thread because unlike most of today's warbirds being spit-polished mirror machines, most all the vintage photos are what your seeing here.

Some multi-engine Filth ...

Those are so over weathered...not realistic at all!

Thanks for sharing, some really good modeling reference right there.

Didn't Fine Scale Modeler do an article for April Fools a few years back? Included all of the tech orders to let air out of the tires for proper bulging, outline the most used or distinctive panels and ban any and all cleaning operations for the duration.

the dirt & weathering just adds to the warbirds character & flavor as "war horses"!!

I was going to add an A-1 picture and then I thought, "What if the dirt & oil is just normal?"

Interesting there's not one photo that shows someone came along and wrote "Wash me" or "I wish my wife was this dirty" ... :hide:

Thanks again Mark!
Was that last photo followed by shots of them ditching? At least the sea looks pretty calm.
By the way, if you want dirt, how about some stateside trainers?
Come to think of it, how about a B-17 trainer thread? I've been on a trainer markings kick lately.

I finally got around to scanning the pictures in my albums from the 1981 Alaska Fish Haul.I'll start a thread on that soon.In the meantime, while not technically warbirds, these three are definitely dirty.I'll use the captions from my albums for these pictures. You'll have to excuse the lopsided framing of the pictures. I can't remove them from the albums without destroying them and they aren't perfectly square in the albums.

I flew 12437 for about 150 hours during the Alaska Fish Haul between June and August 1981.

Hey neat, Boxcar N8093 again!

One of my favourite Warbirds--because it was so perfectly, authentically ratty-looking--was the Mustang that used to appear once in a blue moon at air shows while in the care of the Tallichet collection. Wearing not-quite-correct 55FG livery and the name "Dixie", she looked like a full-scale 3D presentation of a 1945 Kodachrome slide.

Hm, there's a photo-thread idea: shots of so-bad-they're-perfect weatherbeaten Warbirds...
