thanks for the update. It does not sound good for the planes you mentioned.

Didn't one of the Chanute airframes go to Willow Run already or am I thinking of a different museum?

According
http://www.willyvictor.com the C-121 is scheduled to go to Willow Run in Spring 2017.
I was told the Stabilizer of the C-97 will go on display at the Knoxville Air National Guard Base.

Thank you for the photographs Chris. A few stray comments:
- The 133 looks like she is trying to escape though the gate! I am saddest about this one. Perhaps a minor footnote in USAF history, but rather rare and very impressive.
- Agree that the C-97 looks like a goner, especially with the stars and bars cut out of the fuselage.
- The trial nose on the B-66 is really ugly.
- Especially appreciate the B-58 shots- really can appreciate the engineering that went into the landing gear.
Thanks for posting!

There will never again be a plane like the B-58. Too bad there isn't one rare bird with air still under her wings - a fantasy I know but what a fantasy. . . .

"Jones said two planes kept inside, a P-38 fighter and a B-58 Hustler jet bomber, will go to new homes. The P-38 will go to a museum in Miami, while the B-58 is headed to Castle Air Force Base in California."
hhhmmm, to Miami, Florida?

I didn't realize there was a P-38 there. Didn't see it on my trip last year anyway... Any info on a serial number or photos of it?

My guess is that is supposed to be T-38. There is no P-38 at Chanute.

It is interesting to know how these decisions are made to keep or scrap air frames.
Since they are already in the USAF museum inventory (I assume) I would think that a little more effort would go into finding homes for them. I know that we here in Wendover would be happy to get the C-47 - it would fit in as a early 320th troop carrier squadron plane that was part of the 509th CG. I do understand that the cost of moving and maintaining something big like a C-133 prevents most museums from being able to save them. . . alas. . .
