Well, sort of. The elevator worked, but they did not take off or land on it. Low Approaches only for landing and then cut away to another shot. Take-offs were get the aircraft rolling, then stop! FYI, below the carrier deck were the carrier interior sets built to save time while shooting.

Also, the Japanese filmed scenes never show a Zero replica flying. They had three modified Kates that were used in Japan to fly for the cameras and use in the studio blue screen process, but none of the other 25 or so T-6's gathered for the film flew. Most were used as background in the carrier deck sequences. Look closely and you will see all but one T-6 was given the full Tora modification make-over. The others are straight T-6's with some wheel doors and drop tanks added. Look at the ones with folded wings and you'll see they are just cut T-6 wings folded over the canopy. No hinges or supporting structure can be seen.

In addition, notice NO Vals were used in any of the Japanese filmed parts.

Full sized replicas of SBDs and TBDs have been built and an effort made to outfit them with period-correct items, such as seatbelts, oxygen systems, radio sets, etc

Anybody heard about any TBD replicas being started, let alone finished?

Mac

Well, we havent made them. Heard nothing back from our initial contact with the film company, so back to our usual Spitfires, 51s and Hurricanes we go!

Where they were rebuffed by a carrier flight of F-14s!

CGI B-25Js :? Other than that it looks alright for a first glance. It's about what I'd expect from Roland Emmerich.

Well.....you can already see that the CGI takes liberties with physics and reality......

But that doesn't necessarily condemn the movie outright. I'll wait and see.

Shame to spend so much time on accuracy in some areas and so little time on historical research. True history is being lost daily and it's a shame. In another 50 years or so WWII history will be so twisted and distorted it won't be easy to explain the actual facts anymore. You can put some blame on the ignorance and apathy for the video game overkill in all these CGI heavy movies.

Nothing pisses me off more than to see the over the top CGI effects out of proportion. It would be just as interesting if the darn directors and producers would calm down on the CGI and use it accurately. I have yet to be convinced by any use of CGI in any WWII films. How many airplanes do you really need to fill a few shots? Not every WWII air battle was a "1,000 plane raid".

$$$ over accuracy and true story telling .... typical and tragic

I guess this was a rant ... lol

Roland Emmerich...
Anyone familiar with the American Revolution recoils in horror at his movie, "The Patriot" which played comically fast and lose with, well, everything historical. If Mel Gibson had pulled out an M-16 and started mowing down redcoats with it, it wouldn't have been that great a departure from history than the movie actually was.
I'm not going to expect a level of accuracy that I would from any Tom Hanks WW2 productions...

Or Independence Day where he had 14 gazillion fighters all approaching the alien target from one direction only and flying within 20 feet of each other.....

Recent ? That was over 10 years ago ....time flies
I was the Aerial Coordinator for Amelia and that was one of my biggest frustrations on the film . The Production company did not want to spend the money using CGI to remove the registrations. The also refused to let me hire any aircraft from the US except for Greg Herrick's Ford Tri-Motor , and Joe Sheppards Lockheed 10A.
As for the Gypsymoth in the race scene , that's accurate . There were female Moth pilots around in those days.
