The plan for Travis is also to repaint the C-5 in white over grey.
It is going to take a couple of years to repaint the aircraft and construct a hard pad for it. The site chosen is across the street from the current C-141 that is on display.

Travis AFB California? Repaint a C-5? I imagine they will be using paint rollers then?

When I was a kid and started building models, I remember reading on all my Testors products..."contains a substance known to cause cancer in the State of California." I recall saying to myself, "Boy I'm sure glad I don't live THERE!"

Undoubtedly, I stood guard over (under) that airframe from 1974-76 when it passed through Yokota AB, Japan and required a guard when on the ground. At the time they were considered a (very) small step below nuclear weapons. Little known fact, you can stand behind the nose wheel during a monsoon level rain event and never get wet. The water falls about 10-15 feet on either side of you. Added plus: you can prop your Penthouse magazine on top of the tire and its at perfect reading level. You could ask me how I know.

If I remember the nomenclature correctly, it was a "Class A" resource, requiring armed guards while on the ground, regardless of cargo.
Few enthusiasts realize that...that the heavy airlift capability provided by the relatively few C-5s warranted that kind of protection.

Again, modern enthusiasts don't appreciate the kind of security provided back in the day...and this was in the 1980s-90s....not just the red scare days of the 50s or during periods of increased tensions like the 1961 Berlin (wall) Crisis or Cuban Missile Crisis.
