Anyone have an idea what this was all about? Strange turrets, strange engine paint, strange scheme. Location unknown.

I recognize the goofy top turret in a photo in The Final Cut.
Also note the non-standard nose glass.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the invasion stripes. B-17's did not have invasion stripes.

Thx Laurant
There were a few B-17's during the war that actually did have some stripes. usually used for brass transport. B-17F-50-DL. 301st BG 353rd BS. Returned to USA, salvaged 20th Nov '45.

You beat me to it...it took me awhile to find it in the book, it's indeed 44-83690 formerly of Grissom, now at W-R.
In the book, it has most of the same markings seen here including the plane code "Y" in a creative location and full wrap around invasion stripes around the waist windows.

Thanks Mark, I stand corrected! I had always read that 4 engine bombers were not part of the standard for applying invasion stripes since there were not really any 4 engine Luftwaffe bombers in service that they could be mistaken for.
Were any "combat" B-17's applied with invasion stripes? In other words, not ones used for VIP transport, hacks, etc, but actual 8th Air Force B-17's that flew bombing missions?

No combat mission USAAF 4-engine bombers but of course there were the RAF Sterling and Halifax bombers that had the stripes and were used to tow gliders.
