Hi John, It is part of Gateway National Recreation Area and is open to the public, I don't really know about the Winnie Mae. I was there last April.

Hangar B (Historic Aircraft Restoration Project), Floyd Bennett Field
Open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 AM -- 4 PM.

Ranger tours of Historic Hanger B on Sunday from 2 PM -- 4 PM.

Can't help but notice that the PT-19 and Stearman both have only one star on the wing... and they're on the wrong side. Shouldn't they have one on each wing? Glad to see these aircraft are being slowly restored. Hopefully the Albatross and C-47 come together sooner than later. They look pretty complete. The PBY looks like it will take a bit longer. In addition, with the C-97 now out of there (along with any BAHF equipment I assume) I hope HARP will be able to acquire more forlorn aircraft in need and fill that hangar up.

In celebration of the occasion, there was a dedication of the "Winnie Mae," a full-scale replica of Wiley Post's Lockheed Vega, which he flew around the world in a record-breaking eight days. Post made two worldwide flights in the early 1930s from Floyd Bennett Field and was the first pilot to fly solo around the world.

The replica was built by ten volunteers from H.A.R.P. (Historic Aircraft Restoration Project), a National Park Service Volunteer In-Park program dedicated to preserving the aviation of Floyd Bennett for future generations.

Mebbee an "out of the way place" Armyjunk, but still one of the hallowed grounds of American aviation. Thanks for your post. The yellow one looks like a Cuby...got the bare fuse of one in the backyard. I need to find some dad who wants a "cool" jungle-jim for his kid. We had the fuse of an American Eaglet for a few years when we were growing up...
