P-38 Restoration at American Aero Services

I visited the open house at American Aero Services in New Smyrna Beach, FL on Saturday. There was a P-38 in the hangar undergoing restoration (see photo). Can anyone tell me the identity of this aircraft?

This is the ex Mark Hurd, Harrah and Evergreen N505MH. Now with Collings Foundation.

Ugh. Another "Ace" scheme. Besides wasn't (is) LSFM P-38 painted up as it? For that matter does anybody know the status of that P-38?

The former LSFM P-38 is the same one that is now "Thoughts of Midnite", owned by Dan Friedkin for the past several years and flown regularly.

Respectfully, not just another “Ace”.

Thomas McGuire is the second ranking American ace, one of the most decorated USAAF Aces of the Second World War and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. He was in Combat from July of 43 to Jan 7, 1945, less than 18 months. With 38 kills and his book “Combat Tactics in the Southwest Pacific Area” written for the Fifth Air Force, he is an exemplary fighter pilot and considered one of the best of the best. Of the airworthy P-38 Lightning’s in the world, few are in a correct scheme relresentative of a top ace. The last one correctly done may have be Putt Putt Maru, flown by Major Charles MacDonald. As for McGuire, His scheme is unique and while there is a “Pudgy” on static display, it’s about time A P-38 was painted and flown in his memory.

The CMH was awarded to TWO pilots in WWI, Sixteen in WWII and three in Korea. Each awardee is a special and uncommon person. ANY MOH scheme should be considered special.

Nope, when it was with Lone Star it was MacDonald's "Putt Putt Maru".

Here is what you'll do. Have CF's N505MH come to McGuire's open house every year. On the proviso that the McGuire folks take their 38 off the toothpick, make a loan/ exchange agreement with the P-38 National Association at March AFB for their fibreglass Lightning. It even has genuine landing gear! It can also be mounted as a weather vane and swivel around in NJ. And ol' N9957F can return to a roofed shelter in California. Good for everybody involved (Not least the artefact currently "blowin' in the wind").
