It seems everyday i browse these forums I see a new photo of a different cheek gun arrangement or field mod that Ive never seen before....

I was really into building these models as a kid. And I also wanted to re-create dioramas. I entered mine in a model building contest once. Mind you I was probably about 12 or so, and the judge gave my diorama points off because the "damage" I worked into the plastic model wasn't conceivable in the manner in which the plane was displayed. (for example, the one bent blade on the feathered prop of the monogram box and the gear is still up how did that one get bent like that?) I also worked a small electric motor into the wing of my b-17 to have one prop still turning. I thought it was a cool effect. I must have hooked the leads up backwards and had the prop spinning the wrong way...because the judge wrote "B-17's didn't have reverse pitch props" Memories... amazing what sticks with you.

Not to hijack this thread, but modelling memories...

The hobby shop on the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ, in the late 1960's had the coolest diorama in the window. Every year it would get more complex - and more dusty... I bought many a kit from them, and did many dioramas, the Anzio Beach landing kit was my first. Dad got some old paneling and painted it up like water and sand and I glued the ships, tanks and men with Elmer's. They didn't "stick around" for long.

My Fw-190 diorama used the base from a tank kit, and needles from the live Christmas tree that year to simulate ribs and spars for the battle damage. I later took a photo of it with my gen-u-wine 110 Kodak pocket camera, with the centerspread of a Air Classics' issue showing a B-17 low pass, laid up against my bedroom door; it was as out of focus as it could be...

All long gone, but thanks for the memory jog!
