Russian Requests

Wed Apr 10, 2019 5:39 pm

All, couple of requests from my Russian buddies:

1. You might remember a recovery of a C-47 from the tundra a couple of years back. It is being restored for a museum but they are in need of parts. Anyone point me in the direction of the best source who might be willing to sell at 'museum prices'?

2. Also looking for ideas as to a memorial display of some sort. The plan is to have an aircraft spotlighted to some degree, but the surrounds to provide an appropriate setting is open for debate. I was thinking of a stained glass window at the rear, or something of that ilk. Has anyone seen something similar at other museums that might provide a few pointers?

TIA
Dave

Dave, no advice on whom would be a good source, but a word of caution. If the parts they are looking for are C-47 specific, it needs to be absolutely clear to all involved that the parts have a high probability of falling under US ITAR regulations and that they should be prepared to work under that premise. The regs are a pain and shoudn't really apply to anything not in a modern inventory, but they do. I had to go thru the export license process for some camera pods going to Europe. 6" diameter aluminum tubes with some fins and closeouts, but due to the part number stamped on the tube, they fell under ITAR. Same tube and parts, with no part number and no fabrication drawings, and they were not covered...go figure....

Thanks for the heads up on this, I was aware that it can be a problem with complete aircraft, we had trouble with exporting a 'weapon of war' (a Spitfire ) out of the US some years back.

I wasn't aware it related to old aircraft parts as well!

cheers
Dave
