70-80 MPH for the Big Boy


The "official" top speed of 4014 was 70, though it never attained that. Highest it ever did was in the mid-60s, maybe 68. It was actually most efficient, in terms of torque, at around 30-35.

She's hardly a warbird, but I'm hardly complaining. Thanks to all for a superbly fascinating thread! Oh my goodness ... steam! Wish I could hear it and smell it and feel it... :shock:

If while they are moving it, there is a scheduled load, they will take it, UP is not shy about putting the steamers to work when they need to.

When I look at heavy armor restorations, or in this case a steam locomotive, I'm a bit envious that they don't have to worry about fancy paint finishes and small easily damaged parts...unlike a car or airplane :)
On the other hand, with those you don't need a crane or forklift as a key tool either.

Cool post Matt! Thank you so much for posting! I don't have much knowledge of trains but the one time I got to catch one of the steam trains in the wild was about 1990..coulda been '91 or '92 tho. I only managed to snap 3 pictures of it as it blasted by and didn't recall what train it was until this thread. We had a visit in San Antonio by a direct predecessor of the Big Boys, UP X3985, one of the ALCO Challenger series 4-6-6-4's built in 1943. A coal burner, she was converted to fuel oil in 1990, IIRC. From what I've gathered with the war on the horizon it was decide to upgrade the Challengers with an additional 2 sets of driving wheels to the 4-8-8-4 setup to create the Big Boy's.

Now that 4014 is out of restoration, X3985 will be coming out of refurb in a couple of more years to return to the tracks. The following link is a snap by someone else of 3985 as she appeared in Forney, Texas about the same time...looking much the same...blowin' and goin'...not highballin', but moving at a good clip...

Also, I was reading that the Big Boy series got its name when an unknown shop worker scrawled Big Boy in chalk on the first one being built and the name stuck...hence the chalked name on the front of 4014 replicating the event.

You'd be surprised, there are a lot of things to break on a locomotive. For example, if you manage to break the water sight glass (a level that shows you how much water you have above the firebox), you have to drop the fires as there's no way to know your water level. They're really hard to break, but I know it has happened. There are also lots of 'small' parts on a locomotive which can sideline it. Stuff breaks on the road.
Heck, Southern Pacific 4-8-4 # 4449 had a separation between the engine and the tender once (the drawbar just dropped out the bottom), on a long trip. If the cab hadn't had a back wall, people would have likely fallen out to a very bad end. the crew actually had people walking the track to find the pin that fell out and fixed it in a few hours, all out on the road.

Beats me, but UP has used the Challenger (3985) on freight trains in the past.
They don't run excursions like the Norfolk Southern used to, as most of their trips are hard to get to (either very expensive or very exclusive). Many times, you need a lot of coin or be a shipper on the UP to get on board.

Matt pretty much nailed it on the head. The steam locomotives are used for PR purposes. But they can, and will, pull freight if necessary.

I believe 844 pulled a load of freight from Denver to Cheyenne last year. More of a rare occurrence these days but it happens.
